Book 4 in the "Off Beat Travels" seriesAn account of how the author and his wife travelled around China independently, forsaking luxuries such as 5-star hotels, air-conditioned restaurants and guided tours. They hiked Tiger Leaping Gorge in the rain, walked for kilometres on top of the Great Wall, explored a monastery built high up the side of a sheer cliff, marvelled at the immensity of the Forbidden City in Beijing and managed to see a few endangered Giant Pandas. Along the way they enjoyed some excellent Chinese food despite occasionally having no idea what they were eating, and found many ingenious ways to be understood using atrocious Mandarin, hand-written notes and sign language.
